Unknown Canon Games

These games may or may not be canon – there simply isn’t enough evidence to know for sure.

Sega Sonic Arcade

  • (Arcade, 1993)

Status of Knowledge: Manual story: unobtained || Character profiles: unobtained || Strategy guide: doesn't exist

What stops this from being a definite canon game? Sonic Team were not involved in the creation of the title and none of the major events/characters introduced in this have appeared in later definite canon titles (not that there has been a need for this to happen).

What could make this a canon game? The story and characters of the game adhere to the conventions established by Sonic Team’s games.

Where does it come in the series time line? Although, Sega Sonic Arcade was released in the gap between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, it is unlikely to take place between these titles as the Sonic 3 story occurs shortly after the events of Sonic 2. Work on the game started during the development of Sonic 2, so it is most likely that the creators intended it to come before this game. Placing the game before Sonic 2 would help to explain Tails’ absence (Tails has appeared in every single canon game since his debut in Sonic 2).

Tails and the Music Maker

  • (Sega Pico)

Status of Knowledge: Manual story: unobtained || Character profiles: unobtained || Strategy guide: doesn't exist

Is it canon? The story hasn’t been found yet, so it’s impossible to know.

Sonic’s Game World

  • (Sega Pico)

Status of Knowledge: Manual story: unobtained || Character profiles: unobtained || Strategy guide: doesn't exist

Is it canon? The story hasn’t been found yet, so it’s impossible to know.

Sonic Café Games

  • (Mobile phone systmes, 2000 to present)

Status of Knowledge: Manual story: doesn't exist || Character profiles: don't exist || Strategy guide: doesn't exist

Are they canon? Most of the games aren’t given a formal story, so it’s impossible to know.

Sonic OVA

  • (Animation, 1996)

Is it canon? The animation was supervised by Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima and partly influenced the game series (introducing EggmanLand and the concept of Sonic living with humans). It could be set in the future of the Sonic series, where the city (which resembles Station Square) has been destroyed allowing the establishment of EggmanLand. There is nothing in the OVA which prevents it from occurring in the future. However, the games have never explicitly acknowledged its existence (not that they could). It is also noteable that Sonic Team chose to set their second animations series, Sonic X, in a separate continuity.
