Rotating Tunnels

Running at top speed is required to pass through the rotating tunnels.

In some instances, the tunnels make a greater use of the vertical space and require the player to be at the correct height when reaching the end of the tunnel in order to successfully cross the obstacle:

Rotating tunnels in the modern games

Rotating tunnels returned for the Final Egg level of Sonic Adventure.
However, they were implemented as scripted sections, with dash pads being used to automatically propel Sonic through the tunnel.
This prevents speed from being positioned as a super power, as it is the dash pad, and not the Sonic’s speed, that is responsible for overcoming the obstacle.

The tunnels have not appeared in any of the later games.
