Chases

Chases require Sonic to use his speed to out run dangerous objects.

In the video example, simple obstacles, such as spikes, force the player to slow down and wait. This increases the tension, as it allows the lava to move closer to Sonic.

Aquatic Ruin Zone contains a unique type of chase

▲ The player does not have to out run the chasing arrow, but simply ensure that s/he can pass the pillar before the arrow strikes.

Chases in the modern games

Chases exist in the newer games, but, in contrast to the examples presented here, the modern chases are delivered as dramatic scripted sections that are separated from the main levels. The disadvantages of dramatic scripted sections are examined here.
